A British man has been arrested on suspicion of selling stolen data, resulting in a loss of $25 million.
On June 26, a British man was charged with operating under the alias "IntelBroker" on a cybercrime forum and was prosecuted for allegedly selling stolen data, resulting in losses of over $25 million.
The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York announced the indictment of Kai West. It is alleged that West engaged in illegal activities on the dark web under the alias IntelBroker, resulting in losses of over $25 million for the victims.
West conspired with a cyber gang known as CyberNers* to steal data from multiple companies, including a telecommunications company, a municipal medical service provider, an internet service provider, and more than 40 other businesses.
According to the indictment, an undercover law enforcement officer sent a private message to "IntelBroker" intending to purchase a victim's data for a certain cryptocurrency worth $250. The counterpart provided an address belonging to West, and after the payment was completed, the data was delivered, which allegedly included three administrator-level usernames and passwords. West and his online accomplices had listed this illegally obtained data for sale at over $2 million. He was subsequently arrested in France this February, and the United States is currently seeking his extradition.
