JAM: Next Generation Polkadot Technology Vision

On April 19, Gavin Wood unveiled the grand vision for the next generation of Polkadot technology at the Token 2049 conference in Dubai. This new vision aims to fundamentally change the future of Web3, providing the necessary speed, scalability, decentralization, and usability to drive deep innovation in Web3 and the entire technology sector.

At the core of this vision is JAM, a new version of the Polkadot chain that will push the capabilities of Polkadot beyond the current boundaries of Web3, while making it possible to deploy a wide range of technologies on Polkadot. With JAM, the breakthrough scalability that can currently only be achieved through rollups has been brought to the consensus layer.

After the development of JAM is completed, it will become a distributed computer capable of running almost any type of task. JAM will push Polkadot into a world of synchronous composability, which will help reduce fragmentation and integrate activities, allowing applications on Polkadot to better leverage the network of the entire ecosystem. This will open up new possibilities for deep innovation and provide developers with a powerful environment to create in ways never before possible.

Currently, JAM is in the research and development phase. The Polkadot community has a proposal available for voting to confirm this new direction and authorize the Technical Fellowship to approve JAM.

To support the development of JAM and ensure it is built in the true spirit of decentralization, Gavin announced the establishment of the JAM Fund, totaling 10 million DOT to incentivize the development of other implementations of JAM.

What is the next generation Polkadot technology vision "JAM" announced by Gavin Wood?

Core Features of JAM

The full name of JAM is Join-Accumulate Machine, which is a new design intended to replace the existing relay chain. Unlike the current iterative approach, JAM will be introduced as a comprehensive single upgrade.

JAM will be a domain-specific chain for addressing domain-specific issues. In this case, it refers to rollup, which the Ethereum community calls optimistic roll-up. JAM links accept the outputs of rollup and integrates them into a shared state, similar to the functionality of the Polkadot relay chain.

JAM has several similarities with smart contract chains:

  • The JAM chain itself directly executes permissionless code.
  • The status of the JAM chain is organized into different packages.
  • In addition to the encapsulation of status, it also includes the encapsulation of code and balance.

The encapsulation of these states is called a service. Creating a new service is permissionless, similar to deploying smart contracts on a smart contract chain.

The code of the JAM service is divided into three different entry points:

  • Refine: Functions that execute most stateless computations
  • Accumulate: Obtain output and fold it into the overall state of the service.
  • OnTransfer: Process information from other services

JAM distinguishes itself from smart contract chains through transactionless ( operations. There are no transactions in JAM; all actions are permissionless and initially go through the Refine stage.

Technical Features of JAM

  1. JAM uses the RISC-V instruction set architecture ) ISA ( of the Polkadot virtual machine ) PVM (.

  2. Adopting the SAFROLE block production algorithm simplifies SASSAFRAS.

  3. The network uses the QUIC protocol, allowing a large number of validators to establish peer-to-peer connections directly.

  4. Process blocks using a pipeline approach to improve efficiency.

  5. Introduce the JAM Toaster testing platform for large-scale experiments and performance evaluation.

  6. Provide comprehensive cross-chain messaging ) XCMP ( support

  7. Introduce the concept of Accords, encapsulating state and logic to facilitate interaction between parallel chains.

  8. Support mixed resource consumption models to optimize validator resource utilization.

  9. Maintain compatibility with existing Polkadot 1 parachains

The design of JAM prioritizes simplicity, flexibility, and efficiency, providing a strong technical foundation for the future development of Web3. It will bring more innovative possibilities for developers and users, driving the entire blockchain ecosystem forward.
